The self-described 'King of all Media' took to the airwaves earlier this week to announce that he had been offered a high-profile job in network TV. On Friday, the New York Post reported the job is none other than Simon Cowell's soon vacant seat on 'American Idol.' Nobody at Fox has yet confirmed the report.

Is the rumor full of hot air, or might we really see the sharp-tongued shock jock eviscerate off-key contestants in prime time next year?

On Wednesday, Stern told Sirius subscribers that he was "approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year."

But he didn't accept the offer just yet.

"I did turn it down," he told his loyal fans. "I'm not even sure If I want to be working. I'm waiting to see what happens."

The New York Post's source confirms what the disintegration of the traditional media landscape has made increasingly apparent. 'American Idol' is "one of the few shows that could compete with Stern's $100 million-a-year Sirius contract, and 'Idol' bosses think he'd be even nastier than Simon," the insider says.

Stern's unprecedented 5-year contract, inked before Sirius and XM merged and the company's stock dropped below $1, expires on December 31, 2010. Simon Cowell, who makes $50 million a year for his work on 'Idol,' will be out of the judging booth and laying the groundwork for the stateside arrival of 'X Factor' several months before that.

Fox knows Stern would make for "great TV and would clash with the other judges such as Ellen DeGeneres and the contestants," the Post's source says.

But another source isn't so optimistic that a deal will get struck. "Howard isn't ready to leave radio and would like to stay on at Sirius," the source said. "We believe this is a ploy to make Sirius pay up and keep him on his huge contract."

Some analysts believe Sirius and Stern could settle on a multi-year extension at $80 million per year.

100 million a season?  blink

I'm betting it doesn't happen. I'm thinking David Foster maybe? Jamie Foxx would be entertaining as well.

David would be a great addition. He seems to be just as sassy as Simon. Although, I still think this will be the death of Idol, no matter who they get to replace him [if anyone].

Every year, I watch as much X-Factor as I can find on Youtube. It's just so much better for some reason.

PTC freaks out about Stern judging 'Idol' rumor
The Parents Television Council has extended its broadcast TV neurosis to a new level: issuing press releases about events that have not happened.

Usually, something actually has to occur on television for the PTC to get upset. Dirty language. Boobies. Etc. Now the PTC is upset about rumors that Fox is considering Howard Stern to judge "American Idol" ... even though Fox hasn't said a word.

“Fox should move immediately to repudiate these rumors and instead commit publicly to keeping ‘American Idol’ safe for family viewing..." blah blah.
Now, I've stayed quiet on the Stern stuff because the whole notion seemed ridiculous from the outset. Do you think Fox would risk its top-rated family-friendly franchise by putting Stern on the air? Correction: On the air live? And despite his popularity among radio listeners, the man is Kryptonite to TV advertisers -- just ask E!, which used to run his talk show. Fox wants ads from Coca-Cola and Ford, not Valtrex and phone sex lines.

At any rate, PTC is demanding Fox clarify its stance on Stern. Here's why the network is probably going to stay silent: There are two institutions no semi-smart media company will comment on. One is Howard Stern, the other is the PTC, and both for the same reason -- they're publicity mongers that will use anything you say to make themselves seem more important.

Yeah I figured Stern wouldn't be seriously considered, given how controversial he is.

I agree with the X-Factor thing too. It'll eventually KILL IDOL AND EAT ITS HEART WITH A SPOON. It'll be be nice to see Paula and her lover, Simon back together again  wub_anim

I also heard some people suggest Conan O'Brien could be host for a season... I have to admit, that would be rather awesome.
